The Excel Literacy project was borne from the need to address the low reading and writing skills of public primary schools pupils across the country with the pilot phase being implemented in Lagos state. OST worked in partnership with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board to implement the project in 40 public primary schools. A one-hourly extra curriculum session was dedicated to teaching phonics and grammar, so as to improve their reading and writing skills of the pupils. A specialized curriculum was drafted to ensure the children are reading independently and writing effectively after an 18 months intervention program.
After two years in the schools and owing to the success of the intervention, the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board approved the teaching of phonics five times a week during Literacy classes in our 40 schools. This approval covers pupils from primary 1-3 which translates to over 50, 000 pupils across Lagos state having access to these classes.
